Vila Franca do Campo, the islet on the island

Would you like to visit a special spot in the Azores? If the answer is yes, we suggest Vila Franca do Campo, the islet on the island.

In the southern part of the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores, lies the little secluded paradise of Vila Franca do Campo. Forested, secluded and enjoying a mild and somewhat humid climate, this municipality provides the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday whether you are traveling as a couple or with your family. Which is not to say the town is not exciting as well. Quite on the contrary! Ever since the Red Bull Cliff Diving world championship was organized on the islet, on the opposite side of the town, it’s become a prominent tourist attraction in the Azores.

1 km away from the coast, the islet of Vila Franca do Campo was formed as a result of a submerged volcanic crater. Today, the area is classified as a Natural Reserve and it delights with its lush endemic vegetation, the cerulean natural lake and the seashore landscapes.

There is a small, beautiful sandy beach that provides entertainment for children and adults alike, not to mention it is excellent for swimmers and divers.

Everybody knows volcanic landscapes are breathtaking and Vila Franca do Campo makes no exception.

Moreover, the forests that surround the town are home to a wide variety of seabirds as well as luxuriant vegetation.

In Vila Franca do Campo you can visit the center town and admire beautiful churches dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, the Our Lady of Peace Chapel (an 18th century building perched on the highest hill in town). The Vila Franca do Campo Museum is the place to learn more about the history of the place, there is a boat ride taking you to the islet and on solid ground you can travel with Azores transfers to Vila Franca do Campo.
