Praia/Lagoa do Fogo trail

Praia>Lagoa do Fogo trail

Lagoa do Fogo, one of the most beautiful lagoons of the Sete Cidades area on the Sao Miguel island is inviting us to visit it. But you have no idea how to get there?

What would you say about a hiking trail that will get you right to the Lagoa do Fogo, where you can rest a little bit and have some spectacular pictures and then start back to your hotel?

On the road you have the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view of the southern coast of the island and you will encounter many species of interesting plants. Here is our proposal for a Praia/Lagoa do Fogo hiking trail!

Description of the Praia/Lagoa do Fogo trail

Category: Circular
Difficulty: Medium
Distance: 11 Km
Mean Time: 4:00 Hours

This trail begins on a dirt road in an area of grass, but no further you reach a water tank which turns right and starts the ascent through a wood of eucalyptus, incense (Pittosporum undulatum), acacia (Acacia sp.) and conteiras (gardneranum Hedychium).

Slightly ahead you will also find several copies of espadana – a plant from New Zealand which was spun and woven in a former factory whose ruins can still be visited.

Always following the signs you will reach the beginning of a levada along which the trail continues. It is however necessary to have some care because on this trail you can get a little muddy. Throughout the levada there are many species of endemic plants such as the Sierra Grape (cylindraceum Vaccinium), Heather (Erica azorica), puff pastry (Viburnum Tinus), Tamujo (Myrsine retusa), etc.

During the ascent there are several places where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the southern coast of Sao Miguel, for example: Vila Franca do Campo, its islet and Ribeira da Praia. After walking about 2 km you will arrive in a more open area with large slopes on either side, and somewhere further you arrive to the edge of the Lagoa do Fogo. In this area caution is required with the seagulls as they can become very aggressive, especially in the nesting season (April-May).

The return is effected the same way. The route is almost entirely within an area classified as Nature Reserve. It is the responsibility of all (as) we contribute to their protection as well as ensuring its biodiversity by conserving this natural habitat.
