Mata do Canario trail

Mata do Canario (Canary Forest) is a natural park located in the Sete Cidades area in Sao Miguel Azorean island.

This forest area located at high altitude within the island of Sao Miguel presents besides an extraordinary botany some of the finest views on the island.

Because of this botanical richness, the Mata do Canario is set in an area classified as protected landscape.

Description of the Mata do Canario trail

The Mata do Canario trail starts in the Canary Forest vicinity, on the west side of the island.

You will step off the dirt road until reaching the asphalt. The you will turn left and continue for 300 m along the aqueduct to the Wall of Nine windows.

On this point you will go left at the dirt road, through the cedars. Shortly after, you will go uphill until you reach the first viewpoint to the lagoons of the Seven Cities, the Pico da Cruz.

From here, you will have to follow the path that skirts the Blue Lagoon. After 8 km, you will find the diversion information 1.2 km for the Seven Cities. Here you will turn left and immediately afterwards, the descent towards the Seven Cities will begin. In this area some caution is required, due to slippery floor and high degree of inclination.

During the weekend from 9:30 to 2:00 pm

Important information:  Do not forget to mention the name of your hotel and your room number. The children must be accompanied by an adult.

When arriving in the Seven Cities, you will turn right on the bridge and will go 500 m to the church, final point of this Azores Hiking Trail.
