Pico Ferro/Lagoa das Furnas trail

The Archipelago of the Azores composed of nine volcanic islands is situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean of which the biggest is the Sao Miguel Island.

The Caldeiras de Lagoa das Furnas is one of most visited areas by those who visit the Azorean Island of Sao Miguel.

Description of the Pico Ferro/Lagoa das Furnas trail

The Pico Ferro/Lagoa das Furnas trail starts at the Pico de Ferro Viewpoint, ends in Caldeiras de Lagoa das Furnas and lasts for 45 minutes.

At the beginning on a cobblestone way which descends in the opposite direction to the viewpoint and about 200 m later, there is a deviation to the right for a footpath which leads down to the cliff.

It is true that the trail is short but here one can find a wide variety of endemic plants such as shrub (Viburnum Tinus), laurel (Laurus azorica), bilberry (cylindraceum Vaccinium), heather (Erica azorica), and protected plants as lily-of-the-valley (Clethra arborea), giant-rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria), Sweet pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum) and Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardneranum) and also the imposing tree fern.

A small rail section passes within a water line, requiring some caution because the road may be very slippery.

This path is also indicated for bird watching as here one can see ease buzzards (Buteo buteo rothschildi), starlets and herons and also the only mammal endemic – daytime bat (Nyctalus azoreum).

This is a way in which you can admire the Lagoa das Furnas from unique angles.

At the end of the footpath you should go your right to Caldeiras deLagoa das Furnas. At this point you can choose to go the Furnas trail which passes through the parish of Furnas.
